Em geral, uma pessoa perde de 50 a 120 fios de cabelo por dia, que são naturalmente repostos. Mas o excesso de fios no travesseiro ou que vão pelo ralo durante o banho, pode estar relacionado a outras causas que precisam ser investigadas pelo cirurgião capilar.
A calvície é reversível quando detectada ainda no começo. O médico confirma o diagnóstico por meio de um exame chamado tricoscopia, feito por intermédio de um aparelho que auxilia na avaliação do couro cabeludo e na identificação do aspecto dos fios. É um exame importante, solicitado pelo cirurgião capilar, pois permite a avaliação dos sinais clínicos que correspondem as queixas relacionadas a queda de cabelo: inflamações, descamações, rarefação e perda capilar.
